Companies from the Region Are Increasingly Seeking Translation Services in Bosnia and Herzegovina

According to an analysis conducted by the Profis Translation Agency in Sarajevo, 63% of translation services provided between January 2008 and September 2009 were for international partners.

The majority of translation requests in Bosnia and Herzegovina come from Germany, Austria, and Sweden. At the beginning of this year, the number of Croatian companies seeking professional translation services in our country also increased. The most requested services include translations into German, English, and French, as well as proofreading services.

The main reason for hiring Bosnian translators is the high quality of service—equivalent to that of neighboring countries—but at significantly lower prices. Translation services in Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Germany cost two to three times more. According to Profis Translation Agency, certified court translations are particularly affordable in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with prices far lower than those in the region.

“Translation services in Bosnia and Herzegovina are still more affordable, primarily due to the gray market, where anyone who knows a foreign language considers themselves a translator and charges below standard rates. As a result, even professional translation services remain highly affordable,”

However, the value of the translation profession is best reflected in the salaries of translators in the European Union. Professional translators, especially simultaneous interpreters, are among the highest-paid professionals. In Brussels, translators working for the EU institutions earn a minimum of €3,700 per month, with possible salary bonuses based on the length of service, experience, and overtime hours. The highest salaries can reach up to €8,000 per month.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina has highly skilled translators, but many may soon leave the country for European Union markets, especially Belgium, where they can gain valuable experience and save a significant amount of money in just a few years,”

The Impact of GOOGLE on Translation

It is fascinating to follow the latest trends in Google Translate, which is expanding the number of supported languages daily. While this machine translation tool still struggles with full-context translations, Profis recommends using Google Translate as a first step in understanding a foreign text and for vocabulary building. Although grammar and logic issues remain, the vocabulary database is already well-developed.

“Google Translate will soon become the world’s primary translation hub. The human factor will still be necessary for some time, but not forever. We are eagerly waiting to see if Google will introduce simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, as that would be a truly revolutionary advancement in translation,”
